• What bleed does KDP require?
  KDP requires 0.125 inches (3.2mm) of bleed on all outer edges for paperback covers. Hardcover uses a 0.591-inch wrap area instead of bleed, which folds around the case board.
• What is the minimum page count for spine text?
  You need at least 79 pages to add text on the spine of your book. Below that, the spine is too narrow for readable text. KDP will reject covers with spine text on thin books.
• Which paper type should I choose?
  White paper is standard for most fiction and nonfiction. Cream paper is popular for fiction as it reduces eye strain. Premium Color is for full-color interiors (cookbooks, children's books). Standard Color is a budget option for color pages.
• What are the differences between paperback and hardcover covers?
  Hardcover covers are larger than paperback — they include a wrap area (0.591") that folds around the case board, hinge zones (0.4") for the flexible bend area, and cover board overhang. The spine is also wider due to the binding. Hardcover does not support Standard Color paper.
• What DPI does KDP require?
  KDP requires 300 DPI (dots per inch) for print covers. This ensures sharp text and images when printed. Your cover file dimensions in pixels should be your inch dimensions multiplied by 300.
• How is spine width calculated?
  Spine width = page count x paper thickness multiplier. Each paper type has a different multiplier: White (0.002252"), Cream (0.0025"), Premium Color (0.002347"), Standard Color (0.002252"). For hardcover, an additional 0.189" is added for binding depth.
